Singing Colossians 3:16  CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

Singing is a significant part of worship.  It enhances the preaching and prepares the heart to hear and receive the word of God.

Why to Sing

The devil despises the preaching of God’s word and tries to disrupt it.  By singing, the people are refreshed and more receptive to the Holy Spirit and more resistant to the devil.  Also by singing, we praise God for spiritual victories and for salvation. Singing is a great way for a congregation to worship God.  Today, singing in many circles has become a performance.

Where to Sing

2 Chronicles 5:13 describes singing in the temple.  As they worshipped God through music, the Lord filled the house with his glory and everyone knew it.  Psalm 149:1 says to sing in the congregation of the saints.  Hebrews 2:12 is about singing in the midst of the church.

How to Sing

1 Chronicles 13:8 says, “And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.”  1 Chronicles 15:16 talks about “lifting up the voice with joy.”  Choruses and chants aren’t very effective ways to sing.  You enter a passive state, your emotion is stirred rather than your spirit, you are more susceptible to be taken advantage of by the preacher, and God is not glorified.

What to Sing

Songs and hymns and spiritual songs are the songs of scripture.  Instruments are used often in the Bible as a means of worship and praise.  2 Samuel 6:5 says that David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments.  Drums and electric guitars are dangerous.  The musicians will turn your song service into a concert.

A Warning

The devil was the master of music in heaven. His body is a musical instrument containing stringed instruments, wind instruments and percussion instruments. The first person recorded using music was Jubal, a descendant of Cain, the murderer. (Genesis 4:21). Thus, music can be used for evil in a church.  You watch as the music becomes more carnal, the preaching becomes less spiritual and is deemphasized, which is exactly what the devil wants.

Even if the song service is good, if your heart isn’t in singing in church, the service will do you little good.
